Quote: Shafting is the incorrect color/incomplete color in the direct vein of the feather.

Shafting..all though beautiful in this type of bird, it is correct, but not wyndottes.

I wish I could post pictures from the SOP(BLRW are NOT in the SOP yet). I pulled these off the net. These are not wyndottes obviously, but perhaps because they are not you can see a difference. Not all feathers are going to be perfectly colored. Go to http://www.bluelacedred.com/color standard.html to find a ruff draft of the outline. Right now I do not think shafting is a culling offence since that is not a top problem of the BLRW. They need more consistency. I have 50 chicks and no consistency. Most are culls. I know that is the name of the game in the beginning. I know that is the name of the game in the beginning of any project and I give so much credit for all the people who have worked for so many years on this project. It has a good 5 more years worth of work before anything even formalizes. I am going to show them. I was hoping for later this year. I am still hoping. It might have to wait for another NYD hatch and next year. I have all dark birds...but I also have orange, and the wrong leg color from going so dark. Leg color is hard to get right. Once correct and bred correct it should work fine, but that darn orange. It is dark..but it is orange. I have beautiful mahogany too. But I have some beautiful round building blocks. Solid, round, beautiful. I have beautiful clean combs. My beaks are to long. I am jealous of all the short tiny beaks. I have one pullet i am keeping just for her beak. her color is awful..smudgy..but that beak..perfect. I have a male..beautiful color, beautiful round body..tiny..he is sooo tiny. I want to keep him..but I know it will set me back, he also has darker legs. Not that nice yellow. I wish I know someone who was doing a bantam project. OK enough of what is going on with my problems in my breeding.
Thanks for the info, I checked the blr site above but the pictures didn't show up only the text? Won't a chicks feathering that young change by the time their 6-8 months old? Good luck with your projects. One more question: since 1 of my roo's is bklace is he bklred? can GL parents produce a Bklace?(old picture)
Breeding gold laced to gold laced produces gold laced.
This is a BLRW From my computer and picture quality I see blue I do not see black unless that is all green shine and it is looking blue on blue with nice mahogany. Pretty no matter what it is. I like many things about this bird. How much does he weigh? I wish his back was a bit shorter. I should say he is horrible and you should pack him up and ship him to my house.
Hi all, I asked about this bird a while ago but now at six months it still hasn't crowed or laid an egg. So, sorry for asking again but do with think girl or boy?

You need to watch your roos behavior. He will tell you for sure. Wattles and comb has a bit of color so sexual maturity is approaching. if it is a pullet, your roo will call her to eat, if it is a cockerel, he will stop feeding gestures and chase away at times of feed. Even if she is not ready for breeding, he will still pay attention and talk to her. He wants to be her friend.
Thank you for the informationthere isn't a variety known as 'black laced. there are silver and gold laced, both of whom have black lacing, and then there's blue laced red. which may come in black blue or splash lacing... and yes, if you're breeding FOR blue laced red, the only reason to incorporate a gold laced would be to improve type. it would do NOTHING for the color. but you can breed the gold out within a few generations. using a blue (or black) laced red on a gold laced line, you're probably going to regret, since I have yet to see many blue laced reds with the type and quality of many of the gold laced lines. they're out there, but not in abundance. again it would take a few generations to get rid of the mahogany gene if you did. and for the initial question, 2 gold laced can NOT produce a blrw, since the mahogany gene is dominant, at least one parent would need to show it. the roo pictured above is a black laced red, to be used with blue and splash laced reds. if someone says blue laced, black laced, or splash laced, they're referring to the blrw's... any time someone says 'blue' in chickens, black and splash are automatically presumed to be part of the lines as well, since breeding 2 blues will produce all 3. only black or splash will breed true, and will never produce the other.I think Black laced and black laced red are the same. I know many people just say blue laced red wyandotte - black variety. Ki4got may know more but I think breeding the GL to the BL you would start getting the gold more and lose some of the mahogany? I'm sure with lots of selective breeding it can be done but that's just my thoughts. All I have learned about BLRW has been from this thread and I know there is always way more to learn lol. Very handsome boy btw! Thanks for the info, I checked the blr site above but the pictures didn't show up only the text? Won't a chicks feathering that young change by the time their 6-8 months old? It is all green shine, he doesn't have any blue. I will have to weigh him, he's a big boy. Thank youBreeding gold laced to gold laced produces gold laced. Perhaps more pictures will help. The bottom picture looks like a BLRW chick. I am just giving an opinion..on what I may be seeing on a photo that maybe correct..I wish I was more help..sorry Thanks Delisha, I'll try to take some better picturesShafting..all though beautiful in this type of bird, it is correct, but not wyndottes.

Beautiful birds you've go there!![]()
CockerelHey guys, thanks for all the advice.
The rooster pushes her away from food and chases her first thing in the morning but otherwise pays no attention and she happily follows him around. My hen does pick on her a bit though. Today was her firstday making adult chicken noises but no crow.
More pictures as requested. Couldn't get a very good upright one.![]()
