The Wyandotte Thread

I posted this elsewhere, but someone suggested I try this question here. I'm hoping someone can answer this for me. I got a shipment of straight run bantam Wyandottes...blues and columbians, from a hatchery. They're about 2 wks. and 5 days old. Thing is, I noticed that the columbians started feathering in quite quickly compared to the blues. Even when I first got them they were like that. Some of the columbians are feathering in quicker than the others, which may be pullets compared to cockerels (I realize all that's a crap shoot at this age though), but even what could be suspected as cockerels are feathering in much quicker than the blues. Is it possible that different colors could feather in quicker than others? I mean like the columbians feathering in quicker than the blues?

Picture of two of my roosters Copernicus (on left) and Oppenheimer (on right). Finally getting some eggs from Copernicus pen. Hoping to have the strong fertility I had last year. I have never hatched from Oppenheimer but hoping he has good fertility as well.

If it is a true wyandotte then yes. If it does not have yellow legs then it is a fault that needs to be corrected.

All 6 of my chicks have almost neon yellow legs. LOL The lighting isn't very good with this phone camera. I just wish these roos will grow there darn feathers on there backs. The slowest feathering chickens in the world I think.

It is most likely that the Columbians you have feathering in faster are going to be pullets, cockerels are notoriously slow feathering in many Wyandotte varieties. And yes not all varieties are going to feather out at the same speed. Just because they are all Wyandottes does not mean that they all have the exact same makeup in their genetic background.
Hope this helps you out and I don't need a picture to figure this out either :)

yes, some colors will feather faster or slower than others. it depends on whether the slow feathering gene is present... I've got a 5-6 week old blrw cockerel that looks like someone plucked him practically. a large portion of him is still only covered by baby fuzz, while his hatchmates are fully feathered already (different breeds).
