The Wyandotte Thread

Hello!!!
I haven't had time to read all the posts on this thread...but I'm very impressed by all the quality Wyandottes I've seen in the beautiful pics!!! I currently have Silver Laced and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. I love this breed in general...they do very well here in upstate NY.....and are gorgeous and friendly besides.
I'm seeking any info on Blue Laced Columbian Wyandottes. I hear they're popular in South America....but not here in the States. Any info on them (or any other unusual breed of Wyandotte ) would be greatly appreciated Thanks!!
Kathy

Keeping the thread alive....
The good news for me is I now have 8 dozen wyandotte bantam eggs in the incubator. Color me excited and I will give updates on how it goes.
And to answer the questions that will be coming I have hatching eggs of Golden Laced, Partridge, Columbian, Buff and Black.
I am still looking for a GL bantam cock or cockerel to work on reivigorating my strain of White Laced Red Bantams. If you have any or know of anyone who might have one to spare let me know. I realize it is late in the breeding season and not much stock is available, just trying to jump start the program before my old WLR hens get too old and die haha.

Here's an update for you. Had a broody BLRW awhile ago and she came out of it. Then 2 1/2 weeks ago she went broody again and this time I broke down and gave her 5 eggs. Some blrw and some buff sussex. I moved her last week and when I counted she has 11 eggs under her now!! This is one determined broody!! There was even some spots of blood outside her nest box in the other coop one day and the only thing I can figure is someone was invading her space and she was not going to put up with it! In the entire time I have only seen her off the nest once and I'm out with the chickens alot! I've never hatched with a broody before so this is pretty exciting for me! She's due (for the first eggs anyway) to hatch on Tues. Anyone know if this is going to be a long drawn out hatch for her with the later eggs? Do they tend to stay the course til they're all hatched? These eggs could have been added for as long as 5 days later. Here's another question why is it always your best hens that want to set?! I didn't realize blrw's had such a tendency to go broody! But I figure she's gotta know more than I do about hatching eggs!

BTW Katy Beautiful Birds! As always!

She'll more than likely leave the nest with the first chicks that hatch so I'd be prepared to put the later ones in the incubator.

They are a very broody breed I have found. Last summer at one point I had 5 or 6 broody at the same time....this year so far only 2, but I'm sure that will increase.

Thanks for the heads up! I've got eggs in the bator due to hatch Tues too! (more blrw's & buffs) My spare bator will come in handy again! I'll pick your brain here - Can I introduce the chicks hatched in the bator to her or would that be too many for her or would she reject them?

I've never tried it (it's been years since I used a broody) but I know people do introduce chicks to their broodies. Sneak them under at night....I wouldn't think 11 would be too many. I guess the only thing that would worry me is the age difference and whether the day olds could keep up with her and the older chicks.

Thanks so much ! Mine are a much lighter shade. I am disappointed.

Question to all: Aren't lighter BLRW chicks more likely to be splash than darker chicks? I would be excited, if that's the case! If not, please educate me...
