he is pretty. sorry about his injuries. I had a slw hen that was cut open pretty bad. seemed infected by the time I found her too. we cleaned we up dug out the dead tissue. drunk pretty bad too. we left her alone for awhile. she laid a few eggs. several months later picked her up and she was better but full of maggots. we left them. they eat the dead issue so they will help more than anything. she seems fine. I have not checked her in weeks. side not about the maggots. we had a neighboring who's uncle was in the battle of Chattanooga and was hit in the leg and left on the field and couldn't move. probably a good thing. the flies blew his leg and he didn't lose it. if they had given him med care he probably would have died from infection from the amputation.

Oh Peaky, I'm so sorry about your boy, what a bizarre area to be cut open, do you think he could have done it to himself somehow? my laced roo has very long spurs that are extremely shapr on the ends from constant rubbing together, I worry at times he might hurt himself with them but haven't found a way to safely remove them yet.

A couple years ago I had a duck hen that was mauled by a dog, she was in BAD shape to say the least, skin ripped off all over her back and neck, tore through her 'meat' so much that her intestines were sticking out. I brought her inside, cleaned her wounds in the tub with warm water and then FLEW to the Vet to get help. My vet is an older guy, has lived on him farm since forever and keeps ducks & chickens himself. He looked at her, said "looks pretty bad, try this and call me in about a week and let me know how shes doing." He handed me a tube of Animax Ointment, goopy, yellow-colored stuff. I applied it generously to all her wounds for a few weeks and everything was healed after(i think) 2 months. she still looked awful but she was healthy and healed closed. she lives at a friends house now and has had tons of babies since. grew back every feather and looks gorgeous still. Maybe you can talk to your vet about the ointment, mine didn't charge me more than $10 for it and i still have some left.

I hope he heals and is still good for breeding, He's just beautiful, and so full, I just wanna snuggle him!

Our one true white wyandotte breeding rooster is likely going to die. For all the animal illnesses/injuries, I've never seen anything as horrible as I did when I came home today. Our breed is separate from the rest of the flock in a nice 4x6 pen, has his own feed/water and roost. He's been active, crowing, eatting and acting fine all week. I was out checking peeps and went to see him also. Hmmm-he has black on his beak...and his rear. I opened the pen and his entire rear was coated with maggots and he was nearly cut open from his abdomen to his anus. We cleaned him up, I used hydrogen perioxide and then used vinegar after a quick web search. Gave him a shot of Tylan. Dried him good and have him in the "Chick-U". He is a full brother to last falls National champion at the Ohio Nationals. We had hoped to start a breeding flock with him, not sure if that will happen now. I have no idea how he got opened up like that since he's alone. I had planned on just euthanizing him, but he was walking around and active and didn't look like he was in shock yet-so we're giving it a try to save him. I told the kids not to get their hopes up at all.
Sure hope your gorgeous Wyandotte rooster improves. They are a resilient breed. Could he have cut himself on a nail or loose wire in his pen? Something not easily observed? Maggots debrid dead flesh and are a historical medical treatment. They have to have air to survive. might try either Vetricyn spray or Nu-stock on the cut.

I don't like to leave maggot in a wound for longer than two days. They usually eat the damaged flesh up by then and then they can interfere with the healing. I boil them out with peroxide, pour the wound full of white sugar and Neosporin or Triple Anti-biotic salve. Put a gauze pad over the wound and then wrap with vet wrap.

Thank you all-I was glad to hear about your experiences too. (I'm a PA, so I've dealt with some nasty wounds-but this one takes the cake). He's still alive this morning(but sleeping...so I think it's just too bad a wound), so we'll see. It's not evven a true cut-he's totally exposed from right under his anus to his breast-down to the meat-just like out of a horror film. I feel so bad, it just sickens me. My daughter feels worse-she tends the chickens and didn't notice it until today-so she feels it is her fault if he dies. I did spray it with Blu-Kote-but for the extent of it, I wasn't getting too crazy.

I forget who's line he was from, they are here on BYC. If we loose him, I don't know if I'll do a white line.

Thank you all for the support :)
