The Wyandotte Thread

I can't free range. they are all penned all year. Predators all over here.

I do feed a MEAT based feed. I do think that is better. I don't think that would ferment would it???? I don't think I could keep up with that right now. I might try down the road I have looked into it. I also looked into fodder. With 400+ birds both might be a challenge.

I think I will start getting spent grains down the road again. I used to dry it and mix it with the feed but don't have time for that now. Might be good to ferment though. Kinda already started ..... or do you need the starch?

Like you said it might work for someone..... food for thought.

Thanks.

spent grains are great..don't dry them..toss them in a bucket of water and just feed them out..
meat based feeds do not ferment correctly. You can still get some extra benefit by wet feeding it..not much to make it worth the extra work in winter..in summer it is really worth it.
when you have time..make a green feed station you can grow in a pen..all it takes is an old gutter..a bag of dirt..and some seeds. Hang it high enough they can't reach it...plant things that grow and hang down like herbs..Oregano is the best..

Thank you for the information Delisha. Wyandottes do much better on a variety of feed stuff.
Will have to make the green trays. Great idea.
I have used fermented oats, wheat, Boss. The birds love them.
I read somewhere that cabbage can affect fertility...so I limit how much gets fed at one time. Sauerkraut is good. I run carrots thru a food grinder.
Pumpkins are great and help with worming. Check out local pumpkin sales like church groups. Often at the end of their sales, they practically give the excess away.
When I can apples or pears, the skins and cores go into the freezer in gallon bags to be fed out later.

Never heard of sprockets...will look that up.

That is a good idea for the greens. I saw a feeder that was made out of a pallet (did you see my title??? hehe) they planted GRASS in the run and put a pallet over it, it might have had some hardware cloth under the pallet top, cant remember. ANYWAY the pallet kept the birds from DIGGING up the grass and all they could reach were the tops. I did like that idea too. I have pallets. My fear would be it would get too HOT with all the poo. You could take them out after a week or so and sweeten it up and let it rest and grow. Still not easy with 14 pens of big birds. OHHHHHH you could do it VERTICAL I saw that once too!

I love all the beautiful pictures. Wish that I could find someone that lives in Colorado that breeds them or has some for sale. I have recently built a brand new coop for 6-8 hens. I would love to have a rooster so that if I wanted to hatch my own eggs I could. I need help finding someone that has Golden, Silver, and or Blue Laced Wyndottes I am so in love with them. Please help me get started!!!!

Thanks

Look at the post above yours and look for a breeder that ships. That's what I did. ;-)

Quote: fodder would be pretty easy a different way too..
make twice as many bags as you have pens. (buy burlap and sew three edges to make bags) ties needed for open end. I use my old string from hay bales
add one to three cup of grains to the amount of bags that you have pens and soak over night. Hang the bags or lay them flat for the grains to split and start to grow. I use wheat and BOSS.
After three days take the bags out to your coops and inside them out and hang them. I hang them from the twine I used to close the bags. Most of the seeds will have sprouted and the roots will have clung to the bags. It occupies the chickens as they jump up and get the seeds.
Start your other bags..just exchange the bags every three or four days.

A lady on the fodder thread did that for sprouts and you could grow them to fodder or pretty close. The fodder is very susceptible to mold and everything MOLDS in the barn in the summer so fodder is not a real option. I have thought about sprouts though. I can do them in a bucket too.
