The Wyandotte Thread

DuckRaiser, there are Largefowl Wyandotte in White, Black, Columbian, Buff, Blue and Partridge. I'm working in Blue Columbian and Birchen in both Black and Blue. Some are working on a Chocolate. The project birds are not yet recognized color Varieties by the APA. As for Bantam Wyandotte, there are more recognized color varieties.

Does your mother have Wyandotte? If so, what variety?

She doesn't have any but really wants one, I thought if I got one she'd be really happy

I am breeding against the single combs for sure and the really red pullets. I am getting more silvers now. I am thinking my Roo is SILVER and I am just dealing with it now in the pullets. Maybe one more year and it will get cleared up .... mostly.
The males will generally have a clearer silver look than the females. It is something you have to breed for, that is clarity of color in females. Keep hatching and keep culling and you will get improvement. Like my mentor who created my strain of SP bantams always told me..."have a sharp eye and a sharp ax and your silver penciled will improve". Being that we culled 85% of what we hatched last year keeps that mindset going. May not hatch 200 this year but am realistically shooting for 100-125. Always glad to see others working on this gorgeous variety.

I added some new pullets that were the MOST silver and some of the chicks are looking really good. Some are still redder but some are nice and silver looking. NOW what they look like as they mature might be different. I still have to cull for the straight combs so that cuts down on the ones I get to keep.
