The Wyandotte Thread

I have black Wyandotte bantams that I purchased in February. The male won Res. R.C.C.L. at the last show I went too. I would love to hatch eggs from them, however, I'm a little concerned about something. I have been told by multiple sources - at one point a judge - not to buy birds from the breeder I bought them from. I'm not exactly sure why, but I did have one of the Wyandottes that I bought from that person die immeadiately afterwards, and the hen I have left had vent gleet before I treated it. Of course I didn't know about this breeder when i bought the birds. I'm worried that if I hatch them, the chicks will have hatching defects, etc. What are the chances of this happening? Would it be better just to not hatch anything from them? I know nothing about what line they are from and if they are true blacks.
personally, if the birds are healthy, I would put them together and see what you get. if they're winning shows, then the type must be pretty good.

worst case, you get some odd color or physical defects, then you know what the answer is. best case, you breed a best in show.

never know till you try.

I picked up a partridge cochin this weekend. ok body condition, horrible scaly feet, questionable age, but fantastic type and markings. so once she's cleaned up and out of quarantine, we'll see what she produces. if I can get even 2 or 3 chicks with her type i'll be happy. markings i'm not too worried about. i'll be using her in my blue laced red cochin project.

I Second Ki4got. Two of the partridge wyandottes in the pictures I bought from a breeder who was a bit questionable. They were in horrible body condition, scaly faces, dull color, and tattered, un-shed feathers. But after proper care became gorgeous birds. Genetics are your main concern because anyone can take a beautiful bird and improperly care for it. You can't "repair" genetics like you can for a birds health. Breed him and see what you get.

Okay folks what is left of my first hatch is 10 weeks old. I think I have sorted out what is what. After my losses I have made new plans going forward. I just have the need for other eyes to verify what I think/ set me straight. The above little roo I am calling a Golden Columbian.

This roo I believe is a cross of partridge rooster and a silver penciled hen.

Opinions on color please and Thank You.

Okay had to look up what crele was. Definately not that. If he is not a cross between a Partridge rooster and a columbian, he may have a white wyandotte as his mother. Unfortunately, I have no idea how white works in chickens.
