The Wyandotte Thread

I think he will be able to pull through. I saved a black oprington hen that had 5" lacerations on both sides of her body from a rooster and full of infection. I took her for dead but decided what the heck might as well try because she may die anyways. She lived and is doing great. She even stood still while I pulled out all the infection from deep inside her. As long as the wound is clean he should heal great. I put antibiotics in my girls water for about 1-2 weeks since I already knew her wound was infected. Hope he pulls through he is absolutely beautiful!

Thanks! I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I have been searching, I guess it's called "flystrike" and it can be from flies laying eggs in poop at the vent-seems more to happen with hens. My daughter said he's had no more maggots coming from the wound and he was up standing in the cage...keep parying for the best.

Update:

He is eatting and drinking. We had him in our sunroom, so he could walk around a little. Only a few larger maggots were found-lots of little ones. So we re-washed him, cleaned and probed the wound with q-tips and smeared triple antibiotic ointment all over it. Have him under a heat lamp now. He is much more lively tonight.

Do you guys think I need to give him another shot of Tylan(2oomg)-now that he's drinking water with that in it? Thoughts?

hmm..might want to take his temp. If he is over 105 I would. A low grade will help kill bacteria.

Hi everyone,
I'm planning on taking my black bantam Wyandotte male to his second show (county fair) in about 11 days. His first show went great. He was reserve Champ. RCCL and I was highly praised for his condition. Now, I'm not sure what happened. His tail feathers are a mess. I've done nothing different then what I have before. I've checked for mites, and didn't see any, but dusted him anyways and stripped the coop. The front of the coop is wire, could he be getting them caught up on that? I was hoping to do just as we'll at county fair as I did at last show, but now I'm not so sure... Is there anything I can do to improve his condition? I will go out tonight and take pictures of him and his condition now.

I know alot of our LF are molting-not to many in the bantam flock...but maybe he is starting? Pics will help too...
