The Wyandotte Thread

Just had to cull our beautiful Juanita....she was the Silver Laced Wyandotte that never layed an egg but she was our buddy and Oprah's running mate especially when Tina was broody. Found her face down in the coop when I got home and she couldn't hold her head up. I was kinda expecting her to not have a long life....

RIP Juanita...

Wow! Such a beautiful bird! So sorry you had to loose her. :hugs

I am a brand new wyandotte owner as of tonight. I am so excited! I believe they are golden laced wyandottes although probably more of a hatchery quality. I am excited about this thread, and can't wait to take pics of my new girls in the morning!

I have a mixed flock. Currently have a speckled sussex hen, 2 EE hens, 2 barred rock hens, and a golden comet. I also have 15 twelve week old chicks: 2 GLW pullets, 5 EE pullets and an EE cockerel, 4 black australorp pullets, and 3 barred rock pullets.

The 2 GLWs are new to the flock. Will they take well since they are the same age as the other chicks? Or are they more susceptible to be picked on as a breed?

I am so sorry to hear that... she was very beautiful, I can see why you kept her around regardless of her egg status
x2..she was very beuatiful..sorry to hear this news..i have a baby who had a prolapsed vent and i am afraid she may never lay either..but like your juanita ,she will always have a place in my flock and a nice place in my heart..

thank you alaskan..i no they are changing fast ..i also like the pearl necklace look a few have ..but i am still hoping to find a nice 4-h bird out of the bunch..its encouraging to have others comment on my birds..helps us all learn and become better keepers ..

Hi guys, I'm new to owning a Wyandotte. I have a question about roo behaviors: are they typically aggressive, protective, sweet, or a combination of all three? I have a 9-10 week old roo who will need to protect 14 girls once I can put him outside. Thanks.

Quote: Thanks for the welcome Fancychooklady, do all Wyandotte varieties have the same laying quality/ability?
I'm looking into getting Blue-Laced Red and Golden Laced Wyandottes, while my brother is hoping to get Silver Laced Wyandottes.
Also, some of these will be bantams, do you know if bantam Wyandottes lay well?
Thanks.

My Wyandotte lay all through winter. My gold laced are 4-5 years old and still laying. As with all breeds broodiness and molting will interrupt laying .
