Wow I think your BLRWs are outstanding. I wish we could get the dark ones up here in Canada. All I have seen or heard of up here are splash BLRWs.

I haven't made it through all the posts in this thread, but am trying to decide on chicks to order this spring. I've decided to try and perpetuate Buckeyes for sure as I am an Ohio original. However, I'm looking at Wyandotes and LOVE the blue laced red wy's. I could order from McMurray - any opinions about that? I could also hatch if I found some eggs. I am new to chickens as of last ('09) spring and haven't shown yet, although that could be a possibility and am just debating. Will join this thread and keep lurking. I do have one roo I believe is a SLWy - was a freebie from Freecycle. He was our first roo and is very nice and big - probably a couple/few years old now. Does great with the girls. I have thought about just getting SLW pullet chicks to breed to him when they're old enough, but LOVE the BLR coloring. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Drooling almost!!

Thanks for the advice in advance!!

There are many of us here on BYC that sell hatching eggs from our BLRWs. Hatchery birds more than likely won't have as good of lacing or the best body type for the breed. If all you want are egg layers the ones from the hatchery will be fine for you. If you want a bird that has a better chance of looking like the breed is supposed to, go with birds or eggs from someone who is working to improve the breed.

I am new to this whole chicken keeping thing. My birds recently started laying first eggs so I am very much a freshman but this spring if I get a broody hen I was thinking about letting hatch some eggs.

What is this calculator of which people keep referring?

Is the reason the SLW Roo bred with GLW will make SLW pullets and differently colored Roos be due to the fact that the other breed came from this breed?

I really like the lemon colored Roos but I think I got the wrong kind of Roo, I guess I should have gotten a GLW Roo. I read that BLRW were a cross between GLW and SLW but someone said you have to breed in the blue.

I am confused.

Also, I saw this beautiful feathered chick but the guy selling her had no clue what she was. Someone posted a photo of a grey and black striped pullet Each feather seemed to have outlines kind of like tree rings not like a barred rock. It was really pretty. The one I saw was more reddish - Can someone tell me what cross that was from maybe?

How do you get those Red laced white combinations?

Also someone else stated that Chickens with Rose combs have issues with fertility. I have one pullet hatched 5/15 but I do not believe she has laid any eggs Her sister seems to lay one daily - She sits in the nest and sings egg song but I get nothing every time. Is she holding out on me? All of my other girls are laying including my SLW who hatched 7/20. I know from the forum that Wyandottes take a while to mature. I was just wondering.

Question for you wyandotte people: It sould seem that Wy's take awhile to mature. Is this true? How soon before they start laying? Broodyness? Foraging vs. confinement? Cold/heat tolerant? I'm sure these are repeat questions, I know I need to keep reading the posts, but thanks for the info!

Yes, they are slow to mature. I don't expect my pullets to start laying till 7/8 months at the youngest and the roos continue to grow and fill out well past a year. My BLRs go broody quite frequently, my BBSs not so much and my SL aren't a year old yet, so I can't speak to their broodiness. All my birds are seperated and in breeding pens plus I can't free range them because of my dogs, but I think they'd do fine. They're very cold tolerant and mine take the heat well (100+) as long as they have plenty of shade & fresh water. They are very friendly birds.
