The Wyandotte Thread

Like PitterPalace wrote the way to a chicken heart is through food................. I know that chickens LOVE yogurt and if the treats are all laced with yogurt they are more readily accepted. Also my oldest girls have not been handled much, so I wait until bedtime when they are "roosting on the roost" then pick them up and caresse their head etc. Thye "bawwwwk" initially and then calm down. Chickens are just domesticated wild fowl which need to be reminded of that fact.

My chickens are getting daily treats from the garden. I'm not a tomato eater but I planted a bunch of tomato bushes and they are producing like crazy! My chickens are getting a bucket of fresh tomatoes every day! The pumpkins seem to be way ahead of schedule this year. I'll probably start feeding them pumpkins next week. The seeds are great, natural dewormers!

I just set seven BLRW eggs today! My Splash hen is laying. She's in with both a Splash as well as a very dark blue rooster. My splash hen has gorgeous, dark, mahogany lacing so I'm really excited to see what she produces.

Since I don't want to start up my cabinet bator, if anyone is interested in eggs, I can ship a half dozen to a dozen in the next week or so...

I have a question about one of my hen's combs. She is a year old and has a really wide, "manly" comb. I think it's too big on her, but would look rather nice on a roo. It is wrinkled and without all those crazy bumps and points the guys sometimes have. I have heard that in other breeds the size/shape of the male is determined by his mother's comb. Is there any truth to this? And is a wyandotte roo's comb supposed to be smooth or are the points and nubs okay? Here she is.
