I'm just getting into the Wyandottes myself so I can't critique you but I love the colors. Love the bantam blues! Its the first time I've seen them!

The bantam blues are one of my favorite varities, i only have 1 pair, but i am breeding some black hens to that blue rooster along with that blue hen. That little blue hen lays like a leghorn.

Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone can give me feedback on Buff Wyandottes in the attached pictures (sorry the ones of the hens are awful because I had to get them off a video... but hopefully you can see their shape a bit). I got these birds as a bit of a surprise when I was picking up my BLRW chicks from a local breeder. He was going through a rough spot in his life and needed to liquidate his chicks, including these buffs that he had just hatched in hopes to start a buff line for himself. He said they had come from a breeder in FL... any idea who this might be?
I've been trying to find more information about Buff Wyandottes online including here on backyard chickens, but without much success. I guess I'm wondering if I've got anything special here that I want to make sure to preserve (as in convince the DH that I absolutely must have an incubator for Christmas!) or if they're nothing too special. You're honest answers would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for the help!

It's surprising how noticeably curvier the buffs are than my BLRW.

Pauls poultry is in Fl. he sell them so that would be my guess as to where he got them. Paul has very good stock and more colors them most well known breeders. you do not see any of the buffs where I live. you could always say you are helping get the bffs known in your area as they are so much smarter then the BLRW's are!

are the buffs older? sometimes the younger ones take a little longer and have to watch the others for a while before it clicks in their brains.

I have found that some solid color chickens are smarter then some of the bred for colors as blrw, lav and such. may have something to do wiith what they where bred with to get the diff. colors and has just travled down in the bloodlines. I wish you the best of luck getting a incubator,as I would hatch them out more since they are not a dime in a dozen as the blrw's are. I have a dickey 3 tray with hatcher now and love it!. I had a eco 20 before and it was great, but I would not go back to it after having the dickey bator. Maybe for a small hatch only bator. tell hubby that the buff are harder to come by and it would be great serive to the breed to get more people into the buff color. Best of luck!

Actually, the buffs are a few weeks younger. They just catch onto things so much faster. They were the first out the door. They're always the first to jump out the door of the coop and into the barn (of which their coop is a part) as soon as I open the door to feed and water them, and they were the first to realize that they could use the straw bale banking around our house to get out over the fence. I have to admit, I like them more than my BLRW (my hubby's favorites). I might have to compromise and hatch some of each...

I agree those Buffs look like Dave Lefebers Buffs...and that is where the breeder in Florida got his, as a rule they are very good Buff Wyandottes, their color really holds up well in the sun all summer without fading..and they have really good type.

I also agree with Katy...good BLRW are almost impossible to find in the USA, good Buffs on the other hand are available...thanks to Dave and a handfull of others.

I had some Buffs a few years ago from Dave...and I didnt think they were any smarter than the BLRW or the SLW for that matter...did you enroll them in Pre-school? That really helps get them started off on the right claw.....

Jerry
