The Wyandotte Thread

Hey Jonathan...... you guys would be trouble if you got together after a show. Good thing I always tag along to keep an eye on you all.

Speaking of GLWs..... guess I will have a pair of real GLWs from Duane Urch as soon as I can drive out to pick them up.

This book is absolutely awesome. It is a Standard of Perfection for only Wyandottes. It also has the complete history of each variety and how they were developed and who developed them around 1900.
Someone may have posted this before but thought I would again. I printed the whole thing out(yes all 408 pages of it) and I keep it in a large spiral notebook to read and look at here and then. Very interesting reading.

First met Edgar in the early 80's. Most of what I know about genetics and poultry breeding I learned from him. He is the one who took the reddish Naked Neck and made it a true Red Naked Neck. Have tried calling him lately, but guess he was out back with the birds. I miss my afternoons over at his place!

I am the same as you Jim. Everything I learned about Wyandottes and genetics was from him. A great man and a great teacher to anyone who wants to know about chickens.
I am glad he is still doing well, it has been a while since I talked to him.

I'll trade them for a couple of black chicks...

I know about them. My point is that even with them and a few others I can only get my line back

There is not very much genetic diversity! I sold 50 Partridge Wyandottes about 7 years ago all over the country. They got to a few people who got them to a few others and most of them gave up. I've sold birds to the same people 3 and 4 times. Why? If I had white rocks, I could get excellent white rocks from 40 different people, all with at least a chance at a big show. Pauls and Urches and few other places have the breeds. They might even have some pretty decent birds. But they don't have birds that can consistently compete on almost any level in those rare colors. No one does. That's why we need more breeders, so we get more chicks and more genetic diversity and we improve the rare varieties much faster.

that doesn't sound like a very fair trade...chicks for a full grown pair....would have to be a box of chicks. Jerry said if you let him and Nathan take your Jeep for a spin to McDonalds and back he will think about it.....

If you use a Columbian, you should get the penciling back in the second generation on half of the chicks. Let me get back to you on that. This is something I've been looking into but I need to look at a good book quick. I'll tell you tomorrow.
