The Wyandotte Thread

Elinor's chicks :

Maybe we can get tee-shirts!

ha ha - and the reason I wanted to try a Wyandotte or two is because they are supposed to lay so much better than the Brahma and Cochin I have ......(I still think I'd like to try one - especially if they're as laid back as colby318 says).

Mine can give the Silkies a good run on the broody race. Right now Little One has 3 eggs, Alice is on 4 eggs, and Fifi has 3 eggs. Alice and Fifi kept switching nests but seem to have finally decide which one to each claim.

Unfortunately out of the 3 girls not currently being broody I am only getting 1 egg a day. I think the heat may be affecting them as we are already getting triple digit days down here.

Well Lester did not pass his yellow legs to his offspring. The 2 chicks I hatched both have dark legs and are looking suspiciously male. They stand really tall and are already getting wattles in at 4 weeks. Also, they both have the thick legs. Both are getting black feathers in so they are probably going to look similiar to Lester without yellow legs.

Thanks,

He's from a cross of a Penny Roo with a Foley hen. I raised about 15 of these black laced types, and he's the only one that made the cut, or maybe I should say, didn't make the "cut". I realize that breeders say that you can't judge the blue from a black lace version, but I couldn't resist keeping this one.

Here's a view of him from the front.

He is handsome. If he has a great personality too then he is definitely a good pick.

Well, I am not a "breeder." I just love the black laced version. I think they are just beautiful.

Well you are rare! Most the people I know don't like them. But I also think the deep red and black is so pretty!

My wife spotted some SLW's at a local swap meet early this spring and really liked them. A week or two later we found a local breeder and purchased 5 chicks from him. They are growing up nicely, pleasing my wife very much. I think we ended up with 3 cockerels and 2 pullets, but I am not positive.

This morning when opening both coops for free ranging, I am ALMOST positive I heard one of them crow. It reminded me of Peter Brady in that Brady Bunch episode when his voice was changing and he tried to sing.

I'll try to get some good pics to post later today.

A very small show breeder with a very important question: I am losing all of the white Wyandottes that hatch. The blacks are doing just find but the whites grow til they are feathered at about two to three months then just drop dead. None of the other wyandottes or silkies in the same 'growing out' pen die, just the white Wyandottes. and yes, all the chicks are the same size. they are moved as they get bigger so one does not hassle the other. Anyone have any ideas???? They are fed medicated feed as I was told that was the problem. I am so demoralized from them dropping. Please help....
