yes, we found out yesterday.....very sad. He will be missed.

Oh, I had not heard that. That is unfortunate, thoughts to his family.....

Jonathan and I went up to his going-away party on Sunday! When I called up to his house to see how he was doing yesterday and his wife answered I knew something was up, but I couldn't believe he had passed away after seeing him on Sunday.

He was always a fun guy to visit with at the shows and was always willing to help you out if you ever needed it! The Wyandotte breed will miss him for sure! I bet his entries over the course of a year at all his shows he went to totaled well into the thousands. He would show at 30 shows a year and take at least 50 to every show. I think he entered 150 at the national in Shawnee. He was always the last guy to get done cooping out! He will be missed.

The best thing to do is cut them open and see what doesn't look normal. Sounds a little like mareks or something similar. Usually takes the chicks a few weeks and then it's really a quick killer. If your other birds/breeds had been exposed some where down the line, they would be passing on the immunity to them and maybe even the disease to the whites. You could try hatching and raising the whites in completely different facilities. Mareks vaccine isn't too expensive, either.

I would just show the blues..splash is not an accepted color. Enter the blues in AOV as blue laced red wyandottes.

ok... but i didn't think blue laced reds were an accepted color either...

They aren't. Frankly, unless your judge is pretty up on what going on, he might not even know the difference. I saw a non-bearded Americana win best in show at a neighboring county 2 years ago. We've had some real doozies for 4-H judges around here. One would only pick cochins for champions of the show classes. I've seen excellent birds get nothing and some very bad birds win the whole show. Maybe your show has higher standards for who your judges are, but if not, watch what they say. Some of these local judges will get you all mixed up. Anyway, yours could probably just be entered as Blue Laced Red. The difference is really not that big for a 4-H show. The correct title would be splash laced reds, but try not to confuse too many people.
