Well, the pics don't give much of a side shot at all, so I'm mainly talking about the comb. The comb on 3 is much smoother, more proportioned to the head. I don't like the hollow spot in it, but I'd rather have that than the narrow, rough-edged, small combs that other birds have. It tapers nicely to a point, makes a nice leader without a break. The others are rough, broken, small, etc.

I can't really tell, but another thing to watch is white in the lobes. I think I can see a little in most of the pics.

When talking about a Wyandotte head, it should kind of fit into a circle. The comb and the beak should kind of blend together somewhat. Not quite saying what I want, but I hope you understand.​

Thanks Rudy. That really helps. I'll head out Nd have another look at my birds. It seems like the hollow comb is prety common in younger birds so I guess it gets better as they age.?

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's pretty common in adults, too, and a fault.

Question regarding Blue Wyandottes:

I have all three colors of Blue. The blue, black and splash.


I have two cockerels that are black colored Blues. They both have nice yellow legs and nice combs.

Cockerel #1 has very nice type and is nice and heavy. Perfect keeper in every way except one--he has rust color in his hackle feathers.

Cockerel #2 is not as nice as #1, not as nice type nor as heavy. He's OK, nothing I'd cull outright, but not as nice as #1 by far.

I know I should breed for type first and then color, and #1 sure fits that bill. However, I also know we want to avoid the rust in the hackles.

So which bird do I keep for breeding? I want to keep one to put with my Blue and Splash hens.

(I have a nice Blue cockerel for covering my black hens.)

I fought that problem with some of our other rosecombed breeds for a while, its kind of like getting rid of single comb genetics in wyandottes, very difficult since it is recessive you can't see it and does not pop up unless both breeders involved throw it.

So I would guess the hollow comb is also genetic. Is it also recessive?
