The Wyandotte Thread

The hatchery people have professional chicken sexers that check their vents. Even the best sexer can mix up sometimes because their are so many slight nuances to their parts so hatcheries are only about 90-95% accurate. Sex link breeds you can sex by birth because a male is one color and a female is another (example a boy is black while a hen is red). There are different ways to breed sex-linked chickens but I really don't know much about it. Wyandottes are sadly not sex linked so it's a waiting/ guessing game. I have gotten pretty good at sexing but I still have to wait until they are 2 weeks old at the least to make a guess. If only it was easy as sexing a dog! lol

Ok, thank you that's what I was trying to figure out! How they knew my girls are girls ;) I'm pretty sure they got it right! I'll put updated pic of her this weekend!

Are anyone else's Wyandottes mean like mine?

Ours are horrid, they are starting to pick on the other and when I picked it up today it bit me on the hand. Ugh!

Hi there folks,

This is "Steve"... bought him as a chick as a Silver Laced Wyandotte... However, as he is getting older he doesn't have any lacing??? Why, and what is he then?? He is around 12 weeks old in these pictures..

It looks like he is a silver laced wyandotte he just doesn't come from good breeding stock. As most people say on here hatchery stock lacks nice lacing so this maybe where this big guy came from. Still a handsome boy :).

It usually depends on the bird. Wyandottes tend to be more docile but there is always that one odd ball bird that is more aggressive. They may chill out after a while. I know mine are quite bossy at times toward other hens. They are the top birds in my flock.

My first Wyandottes came from the feed store (hatchery birds) and they were aggressive and I got rid of them all

Now my BLRWs that I purchased from private breeders, that are now my own line, are real sweethearts and my favorites of all the breeds I am working with

Mine are sweet as can be. They follow us around and eat out of our hands. Much more docile than the EEs or barred rocks we have. And they are hatchery birds...maybe I just got lucky.

Ours are from a feed store so that may be it. We have one that is doing okay but the other four are just wild things! And one of them starts a little fight every time a RIR it's age even gets close to it. It looks like a full size rooster fight at times. Will probably have to butcher when they get bigger.

Stinks because they are so pretty. I'm still new at this so I'll keep trying!

Thanks guys!
