suspended animation

AKA Cold Sleep.

It would be quite pointless to allow the birds to consume oxygen and food supplies that are vital to the colonists while traveling anyway. That is why they are going to be in freezers.

All good reasons for keeping them in suspended animation during the journey.

I hadn't exactly gone down that list, but I definitely prefered the idea of cold sleep shipping to the idea of having the Starship Barnyard for months or years on route.

But if there was no other means of shipping livestock to a new colony planet they'd have to do what they'd have to do.

Can you imagine trying to catch a chicken in zero gravity? Wow.
Would wings work for movement in zero gravity? Or with no gravity is there nothing to push against? Or would the wind generated by their flapping push away their pursuers rather than move the chicken ahead of the pursuers?

And then there are the floating hazards... perfect spheres of chicken poo floating through the air... feathers & feed... it would truly be chaos at it's most sublime! Makes me smile just thinking about it! And about the chickens trying to land on a roost and flipping around it again and again as they desperately hang on with their feet

No chickeny words of wisdom here, but just wanted to pop in to say good luck on your nano. I've done it two years running, myself, but won't be doing it this year due to prior commitments. If you haven't done it before, it really is a lot of fun

Thanks. I've tried it but not succeeded yet.

I get derailed around the holiday.

But this should be a fun idea to run with and plenty of word count in long descriptions of various livestock as they settle in and get to growing things.

IMO, its a serious flaw of SF colonization novels that they frequently concentrate on science and exploration without ever establishing a sound agricultural base to feed everyone.
