Interesting, i didn’t even know Lavender was an option. Sometimes I miss my Marans but I have I only have so much pin space and most of it is reserved for Bresse this season. I’m trying to be more intentional about breeding decisions not just letting the chickens make all the decisions.

Basically I’ve done the same, just focusing on marans. Lavender isn’t a recognised variety and I assume someone had to breed Orpington in at some point, but that was so many generations ago because the breeder imported an otherwise good quality marans cock to cross to his silvers for his lavender flock.

Got this egg today. This is like the egg I saw Claudie lay when she just started. But I haven’t had one in a while so she must have stopped laying, so non of her eggs in the incubator.

I thought the longer speckled eggs next to Chanel’s in the inner ring were Claudies that had changed as she matured, but that’s unlikely now. So I don’t know who laid them. My guess is Joannie as these eggs are similar shaped to Chanel’s (her dam) and speckled like Claudie’s (her sister).
Don’t know who lays the darkest eggs I set either, but assuming Joan’s are the speckled longer ones, it’s either Belle or Esmeralda. These two are unrelated to Chanel and her daughters.

I got this random egg yesterday. Where there is usually dark speckles there is no pigment at all, just white shell, unless the white is applied over but I don’t know how that would work.

I’m thinking (this is before seeing them in the flesh, mind you), I’ll aim to grow out a cockerel from Chanel and one from those darkest eggs. This would allow them to be less related, but also prevent either carrying any of Loki’s genes.

I liked Loki for many reasons but making sure neither cockerel has the genes from his tail is probably best since these will lend their genetics to much of the future GCM line.

This doesn’t mean I won’t breed Claudie or Joan, they’re way too nice for that, just having their cockerels as founding breeders may be dangerous given their sire’s tail. (Not that either of them definitely have eggs on the incubator, at least Claudie doesn’t, and Joan is to be confirmed.)
