I second the walk in coop. Be mindful of any kind of trip hazards. And make it plenty wide enough as to not have any way to bump their heads or accidentally knock a shen on something.

I agree with the Barred Rocks. Very sweet girls but are prone to getting um.. curvy, if given too many treats.

If watching them is the part he enjoys, you might consider a flightier breed rather than the calmest, tamest, "easiest" breeds.

Of mine, the three australorps and one of the brown leghorns are very calm, tame, and easy. The other brown leghorn is Spice.

I gave Spice to friends after 18 months because they have a much larger barn and run. I'm sure she was a trial to the others here and that she is happier there. But I miss her dearly for all her activity and the material for conversation she provided dh and me.

The others are nice, I like them, but they don't generate much conversation material without Spice around.
