Therapy Chickens

Hi! I just had a random thought. There are so many posts that ask about how to get chickens when they aren’t allowed. I was wondering if anyone has been able to skirt this clause by having therapy chickens? I was telling DH the other day that my blood pressure seems to go down if I’m in the garden or with the chickens. I’m sure there are people out there suffering from anxiety or depression that would feel much better if they had a couple of chickens as therapy pets. Anyone know if this would be a legal loophole? Just like you can’t take animals in many stores UNLESS they are therapy or guide dogs. I am in no way suggesting that this should be used by someone with no medical issues, rather if there were some medical issues that could be improved with chickens if the law banning fowl would be bypassed with 2-3 therapy chicks.

Can you explain your therapy pets on my blog to help those with PTSD?

It’s an interesting thought and I love all musings, but I think the information has been supplied that best refutes the argument.

Also - I can’t imagine a chicken in a plane would be calming.

Being Deaf, it really irks me when people try to pull off their pets as service animals. The time and money that goes into training for each specific needs. Just want others to be aware of the new laws and consequences regarding Fake service animals,
Anyone can have any animal that comforts them, cat, dog, gerbil.... have fun, relax with your fur babies or slithering snakes....

I completely agree!

This is a subject where the observation of actual abuses fuels the perception of widespread abuse, sadly making chicken ownership more difficult for everyone. Further, the bona fide use of therapy animals by those whose challenges are invisible tends to reinforce preconceptions. The vast disparity between regulations setting minimal requirements for service animals and those regarding therapy animals further reinforce negative stereotypes.

SO... Exploring this option is likely best left to those with need of therapy animals and their therapists, rather than casual discussion on a forum which might be seen as promoting chicken ownership frist and foremost, rather than seeking therapuetic companionship - so as not to appear to give further support to those negative stereotypes.
Well said, and its just not cool to cheat.

More like Comfort Chickens.... They cant be and arent recognized by the ADA as Theraphy Chickens otherwise known as Service Animals... so dont get people confused between a Pet and Service Animal as it is now punishable by lawwell I was hoping people understood

Yeah therapy chickens I guess lol I know they are not "service " animals like the government likes to name things they can tax I just heard about soldiers Caring for ducks as a form of therapy but you know what I meant

Chickens are used in nursing homes across the country.
They are companion pets. Taking a chicken into a restaurant that is for emotional support might be not a good
idea but a chicken used for PTSD going into tractor supply is different.
Letters from therapists and endocrinologist for tnu rooster that would wake owner when dex monitor would sound, he would wake her. No, it was taken and died while in Animal Control custody.
Living in country usually means medical care is scarce. No sidewalks for wheelchairs. Being snowed in.
More predators. And with car parts shortage no busses or taxis. Many time no electricity for days or weeks for oxygen equipment and other electrical medical equipment.
So to those that objection is if you want chickens move to the country that is not a good option.
City people do not realize how intelligent chickens are and how some breeds are so friendly. Many people during pandemic are learning and are loving backyard chickens. Hopefully attitudes will change and chickens will be recognized as more then chicken nuggets.

I think the argument could very easily be made. I have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder. I just got chickens again this summer and feel like I have a reason to live. My mind is constantly occupied with what my flock will be in 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, and so on. I’m constantly analyzing possibilities and I am even aware that my plans may not work out but I know that wouldn’t discourage me from moving forward. As a person with depression I feel like I am never good enough at anything I do. Chickens have such a short generation span. I can fail, fail, and fail again without getting discouraged like I do in relationships or at work. Chickens could have very easily saved my life. Life is excruciatingly boring. Chickens entertain my mind which is much healthier than other garbage I used to fill my mind with.

I think a local city council or other local government could easily be convinced to make an exception in a case like this.
