there should be a warning posted

I love to watch the dust bath show, my husband says it is getting to be like reruns! I think mine pretty much choose when to start bathing, they dust in the shavings first and when I see them doing it I put out a dish of play sand.

A sand box with play sand or contractors sand should be one of the first things you put in the brooder box. New chicks eat it and dust bathe in it right away. It acts like tiny grit and it also has prebiotics, both of which help prevent pasty butt. My baby chicks were dust bathing within an hour of being in the brooder. After a couple of weeks of them eating chick grit, I took out the sand box--the chicks were not pleased. They tried dust bathing in the grit, but it was not to their liking, so I put back the sand and they chowed down and had a group dust bath.

I had the same thought as the the OP! I was all ready for the face-down sleeping, but absolutely thought my chicks' first dust bath was a seizure, death throes, some horrible neurological problem, or all of the above. Luckily the kids weren't right there!

Those little fuzzballs are giving me a run for my money, for sure. I love the little hooligans.

Diatomaceous earth is fabulous for chick dust baths! Makes a huge mess, but it's fabuious for them and helps prevent mites and other parasites. We use a small square baking pan, so they can't tip it over easily.

OMG I am dying here. I totally thought I killed my chick by giving her sand. I have 4, but only one went into the "death throes". OMG I sat there going "Was the sand poison?" Then the other chicks crowded around and started pecking the sand off the twitching chick. LOLOL

Hilarious! I WASN'T forewarned, and I've had my peeps almost a week and suffered little heart attacks at times. The leg straight back had me thinking they were ready to go into convulsions; asleep with their heads hanging over the feeder holes looking like dey leedle necks are broken...

Gosh these little beggars are cute! They iddy biddy tail feathers are just starting to peek out, and it is too funny. Oh, and they're getting to the DH, too!

I love how one will decide to "bathe" and just sends the shavings all over the other ones sleeping nearby... I always expect them to jump up angry, but they seem pretty forgiving
