BAD NEWS

This afternoon everyone whent down to the coop to see the babies, I picked up the black one and had it in my hand. One of the other chickens came up and grabbed the chick and ran off with it. I lunged at the chicken and pulled it's tail but it had dropped the chick out the pop door

which is over a meter off the ground. It was lying on it's back and looked like it was dying

I threw myself out the pop door and picked up the chick honestly thinking it was about to die. I am so mad at myself

but he gradually got better. he's still wobbly, scared and not right but I really really really hope he makes it.
I guess we will see in the morning

He's still alive

I was so scared he was going to die.

I have decided with the other three broodies that are sharing five eggs, that one can have whatever hatches out of the eggs there and at hatching time I will buy some chicks for the other two broodies.
I have some australorp eggs orderd ( I'll be picking them up today or tomorrow) but the chickens have already been sitting for almost two weeks now so I think five weeks is just too long. So I will hatch the eggs in the incubator and sell them. I might sneek some bantam eggs in there as well

They are just too darn cute.

Im so glad I am reading the update on the little black chick at the same time I read about the accident!! Its so much easier to read both and once and not have the wait to see if the little one is OK. So glad to hear everything was all right in the end.

Well, The four chicks are doing very well. So is chicken josephine. It is day 25 for the two eggs that haven't hatched. I candled them tonight and saw what looked like one on day 18-19 and in the other the chick had pipped into the aircell but still had some fluid stuff up near the aircell. both weren't moving. I have them in the incubator at the moment. I was going to chuck them out but I thought I would check with you guys first.

I picked up the australorp eggs today (15) and have them in the incuabtor now along with six bantam eggs. Tomorrow is day 1
The other eggs under the other broodies should be hatching this friday. I think, I can't really remember.

Relatively new to chickens and just put 9 of my own BUFF ORPINGTON eggs in the incubator. I loved reading about your broody hens - none of mine want to go broody at all. I heard somewhere that Buffs weren't too excited about sitting on a nest..maybe this next spring and summer will be different.

I'll be interested to hear how your incubator hatching goes.. and see updated pictures of your chicks.

I never chuck eggs if I can still see any veins in them. Sometimes the baby takes up too much room to see much at all...but when they die- you can see a clear area with no veins.
