it's chicken hatching time. I think it will be refreshing to only have to incubate them for 3 weeks.

all my broodies have lice.
the chicks should be hatching in two days. WHAT DO I DO.

What do you have available? Ivermectin pour on? .5cc on the neck would work.
Poultry dust? That would work, too, but must be repeated in 10 - 14 days.
Go ahead and treat now. Clean up the brooding area where the hen is sitting, and try to prevent the chicks from getting it. If they do, you can just treat them with the powder.

Good luck. Sorry. These things just happen, darn it.

poultry dust won't hurt chicks. Just don't get it in their eyes or nostrils. Ivermectin .... do you have that in Australia? .... works well on the hen. It is a wormer and also kills mites and lice. It might be better to use dust on the chicks though, though doubt the Ivermectin would really harm them (though I am not for sure).

Ivermectin is easiest and you probably won't have to re-treat. It also has the advantage of worming them too--there is a 2-3 week (can't remember) withdrawl period for the eggs, but your girls will be busy brooding eggs/chicks so won't be laying anyhow. I'm not sure if you can use it on chicks if needed or not. If I was in your shoes I'd treat the hens with the ivermectin, but get the sevin dust too and use it in the coop and nest boxes (after replacing all the bedding and cleaning) it can also be used on the chicks if needed. If $$ are an issue the sevin dust will cost quite a bit less and still do a good job on the lice, I'm just partial to worming the broody girls at the same time because they probably need it anyhow and I hate tossing eggs.

All the chickens are in the same coop. the broodies and all the others. so they all probably have the lice.
so if I treat them all then I won't be able to use the eggs, for 3 weeks. that must be pretty toxic stuff. i'll go to a produce store today and see what they have.

It really is not bad at all. As a matter of fact, some countries use it for worming people. I know it is recommended to toss the eggs, but I don't. I do not sell eggs, but we eat them, and many others do too. It is hard to "overdose," on Ivermectin.

Some say the DE works but some have reported seeing the bugs walking through the stuff. Maybe its benefit is more of a preventative measure? I would use the ivomec/ivermectin as it would only get on the hens and then use the dust in the coop and nest boxes. I didn't toss eggs either and am still kicking...but I don't sell or give eggs away. I think the crap you get in a fast food meal is more deadly....LOL
