THERE'S A DINOSAUR IN THE COOP...Hatching again, PICS.

Well I did candle them last night and saw veins. but I cracked them open today and in the first one the chick had absorbed the yolk and it was all swollen

But it was also deformed, The top bit of It's beak was way smaller then the bottom and it looked like there was either an eye on top of it's head or it's brain was bulging out. it just looked creepy.
Is the deformity from chicken josephine getting off the nest or is it from the perents. Like interbreeding or something.
The second one looked normal just dead, the yolk was on the outside.

Day 3 for the australorp eggs.

4 days till the other eggs under the broodies hatch.

Sorry they didnt make it- but in the case of the first one- its probably better it didnt hatch- or maybe it was just too deformed to hatch anyway. Something like that can happen for many reasons- not mum leaving the nest or genetics alone. Just like humans- things can wrong and they dont develop right. It could be just a fault when some early cells split in the first few days of incubation- or any number of things that are beyond our control. I used to open every egg that didnt hatch- but I dont do it much anymore. I opened the double yolker when the twins died on day 27 just to see what had gone on in that egg- it was interesting- they werent deformed- just one of them wasnt in the right position to hatch. Others I have had had looked kind of deformed- but mostly they just run out of air before they can pip.

Fingers crossed for another good hatch for you this time around.

Well I just hope your right and it isn't from the parents. I would be shattered if it turns out to be. I would probably have to start all over again.

Lock down today for the other broodies.
Will broodies share chicks or will they fight over them? I am hoping to have them all in the one cage but if the are going to fight over all the chicks then I'll have to think of something else.

Day 4 for the incubator eggs. I am going to candle tonight, day 10 then day 18.

I'm running out of cages.
I think I'll have to buy some pet carry cages for them all to lock them in at night. but I don't know what to do at day. argg, I think this means I have to build another coop type thing.

I have read stories were hens abandond their nests, and people still putting the eggs into incubators, so the eggs eventually hatched.

I have a dog house that I could use, but I'll need another thing too. I'm sure I'll find something.
also does anybody know why you can't have chickens and quail together?

Great news !!! You must have some very active roosters!!! I did a great swap today. I collect wooden boxes from work that are just thrown out if I dont take them. Some I make into nesting boxes and sell at our Poultry club auctions - but today I swapped one for some fertile eggs. I was wanting about half a dozen- but the fellow ended up giving me a dozen from his chooks and another dozen that were just posted to him. He had 3 dozen sent and not enough room in his incubator- so now I have 2 dozen eggs ready to go in.. No idea what I am going to do with so many chickens....But I have told him he is welcome to any that he wants back for his own breeders.

I have 6 Polish eggs that have been in for a week already. I am actually looking forward to something other than ducks for a while.
