My wife finally convinced me to get chickens for the back yard.

She's wanted a couple of birds for a while now. As a kid, she was in 4-H, and learned quite a bit about raising and caring for chickens. So, what got me to relent? We've decided to take yet another hack at a garden. She's taking garden classes at the food bank, and she's started a compost bin. Needless to say, chickens fit in nicely with this equation. Now we've got a couple of chicks in a brooder box in the spare bathroom. Cinnamon is an Ameracuna and she's growing fast. She's a beautiful bird already and can already clear the box if the cover is off. Sugar is a Silkie, and while she's growing nicely, she's tiny next to Cinnamon. Sugar is the talkative one of the two. Now, stop me if you've heard this one before: she's wanting to go get a couple more chicks just in case one's a rooster. She's saying something about chicken math and how 2 chicks can turn into 12 hens and it's kinda scary

Now I just gotta get building on the coop. I'm still drawing it out and we're stalking the cull lumber bin at Home Depot. She gets chickens, I get an excuse to build something. I guess that works out.

For those keeping score at home, we're in Tucson.

welcome from Cochise County! Chicken math=build your coop bigger than you think you will ever need, and you wont have to build a second one

My project started a couple months ago, and went from maybe 4-6 to over 40 birds. I cut it back to 35 (had a LOT of roosters... HAD).

Keep a pellet gun near the back door for coyotes. In my neighborhood I have mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, skunk, javalina, even had black panther sightings/pictures. oh, dont forget the owls and hawks. My friend just lost 40 chickens and 7 ducks to a bobcat (his claim).

best of luck
