I just spent 45 minutes trying to get my dog back in the house because he smelt bear outside. I'm sure it doesn't help that my neighbor has a bird feeder out but it seems like it is every day this year. We have lived here for 5 years and never had a problem like this. I can always tell by the sound of the dogs bark, he goes nuts when he smells bear. I guess I picked the wrong year to get chickens grrr. I'm glad that the dog does his job in chasing them away but afraid that I am going to get in trouble for him being out there barking. Considering his breeds, I have to let him run or there will be trouble. Does anyone know who I need to write to for the NJ bear hunt? TIA

I will check out that thread.

i live in VA and way back in the woods - have had come around more often than i'd like. a few weeks ago i was recharging my battery - keep them in a movable electric fence (it usually does the trick against fox and even bears so far), but that night one turned the chicken tractor over and killed my rooster and 2 hens before my dog and i chased him away.
i just recently spoke to my sister about - she lives in Alaska and she said that what they do to keep bear away there is pour a little bit of amonia in a mason jar, fit on the lid, punching a few holes in the top, to let the scent out and then bury it (so it won't tip over) with the top sticking out in the ground around wherever they seem to be attracted (trashcans, outhouses etc) - their noses are so sensitve that they really stay away...
gonna try it since last night he came around 3 times... no fatalities this time - the fence was fully charged, thank goodness.

Where I live it's against the law to hang out feeders after April 1st. It's called bear-baiting.

I thought New Jersey out-lawed bear hunting? Too bad...makes them unafraid of people plus the population gets out of control. However...if there is a hunting season I would love to offer my services!

By the way...baiting is legal in many locations...great way to make sure you are getting a barren sow or boar instead of a sow with cubs.

Yes, bear hunting is against the law. There was one hunt a few years ago but there hasn't been one since. I know baiting deer is illeagal here.
