These things stink, its Tractor Time! Video Update pg3 #29

Excuse me? My meaties produce very little odor. And there is nothing wrong with my nose either. You are welcome to come check my pens any time. I think the reason my meaties don't smell is because I make sure the bedding stays fairly dry. If your meaties stink it is because you are doing something wrong. Like you have them too crowded and the bedding gets wet. I don't use a tractor. Just a box stall in the barn bedded with shavings.

I was toying with the idea of installing a starter motor and making an axle for the wheels. A couple of bicycle sprockets strategically placed . . . and a motorcycle battery.

Just pick up 1 end, hit a thumb switch and it will move itself.

Dunno how to get a tractor to creep around the yard on its own tho, THAT would be interesting!

Do you want a cookie?

I guess you are just a better chicken keeper than the rest of us, cause everybody elses STINK.

The more ventilation and bedding used the less the odor. My guess is that cassie is not stingy with the bedding, and has more than adequate ventilation in that stall. I use an old grain bin, and ventilation is lousy, and if real rainy will have some water seep in from the outside. When the bedding gets wet, it will release some of that ammonia nitrogen that had been tied up in the wood shavings, and it stinks. I use more bedding and a fan to reduce the odor, and it goes away quickly.

I would like a different place to raise these birds, but am not convinced that a tractor is the right way for me. Anyone built or seen plans for a dedicated chicken broiler shed for 50-100 chickens?

I've always contemplated a tractor that could crawl on it's own, maybe a couple of feet an hour...

Or perhaps a winch line that could slowly move it a certain length each day.

the only problem with that idea is that when they don't move, there will be legs getting run over. Trust me i've thought of it several hours also

. The best thought i had would be a hot wire at the end to keep them moving.

I agree. Mine didn't stink either. OP, I don't think you need to get rude and defensive about it.

Last year we only did 14 in a 6x10 tractor. I had to move them 2-3 x a day the last month or so. and yes they stunk, however I had NO bedding. We chose the tractor so that we could get them up and moving and they were hard to get and keep walking for that short distance. They kept getting their legs under the back end.

I moved it ??? 12 feet forward every time. The grass was

every time too. But when new grass appeared they were eager to eat it. Which means they walked around otherwise they just sat at the feeder.

So today was the big day, and they are out there adjusting to the new digs right now.

Lol, here it is an hour or so later and my Jack Russell is right here at my feet, wont go anywhere near the chickens, and he doesnt even have the collar on.
I guess he got the point.

Whether or not you take me for being rude, THEY STILL STINK

They look good out there! Ours were not stinky, but they free ranged a lot. Ours were, however somewhat agressive. They'd chase my Tibetan Terrier all over the yard. It was HYSTERICAL.
