Due to the warmth of the heating lamp the bacterial growth in the water increases strongly.

You might want to add 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider to 1/4 gallon of fresh water. This reduces the bacterial growth and benefits the general health of your chicks and you only have to change the water once a day ... ;)

My chicks enjoy jumping onto the side of the brooder if the top is off... it might be that they like being high up. Do you have a roost for them?
