It's NOT for roosters. In fact, excess calcium is bad for roosters. I found this out the hard way. It affects the kidneys and other organs.Because the Maintainer feed is an all-flock feed: layers, roosters, chicks, non-laying hens. Therefore enough calcium to support bones and muscle/nerve function, but NOT enough to also support eggshell production.
Last summer was brutal. I was soaking my flock in a rubber horse tub.
Around that same time, my rooster developed a persistent "back kick" (search for kick-starting Roo).
After that, I did more study and found out high calcium is detrimental to roosters.
So now I am feeding my hens and roos separately. The 16 percent maintainer could be called "ultra low calcium".
So now my rooster is on borrowed time. Because of this, he is basically on meds for kidney failure. That's why he was "back kicking" (discomfort). I didn't figure it out until recently, after doing the research. I keep dosing him with stuff from the vet. It's just a matter of time... and I'm not giving up on him.
The Human Super B complex (one half vitamin) is helping along with other concoctions (vitamin E gelcaps).
Time will tell......
