They Fouught to the Death! Update with pics..

I suppose it really could have been anything.. yes, the crate was outside. Stupid!! I just tied screen over the bottom portion oof te crate. The gashed little chickie is much better. It was awake and lookiing about when ii got home just now. I ggave iit some eggs and it ate and took a drink. Ii don't want it to be outcast by the other chicks, so I took 2 of the calmest, friendliest chicks, the ones that fly on my arm and don't sqwalk or fight when I pick them up, and put them in with Gash. They all ate some eggs and are going to sleep together.

Looks like it might work out ok. Only one loss. I hope.

So sorry to hear of that.

But, yeah, not even fighting/gamefowl breeds of chickens fight to the death at such a young age. It was certainly a predator.

So sorry for your loss, hopefully it won't happen again.

Could it have been a rat! They go after my hatchling turtles and tortoises and can get into tiny spaces - I mean tiny!!!!!! The slashed neck sounds like sharp incisors to me! I am so very sorry for your loss

Cats can and have done some amazing things with their paws. I had a cat once that managed to reach in, pull out and kill a hamster through hamster cage wire...that wire was only 1/4 wide!!! He wasn't a small cat either...when standing on his hind paws, he could reach almost to my waist and I have a 32" inseam.

Aww, I am so sorry to hear that! I'm betting that it was a predator....rat, kitty, weasel....something that could reach in.

So sorry and hope you're feeling better today,

Sharon

You're right about that, for sure! My two indoor cats made a laughing stock out of me one time when I tried to give them a vacation feeder while I was away for the weekend.

I tested it out before I left, and within 2 minutes, they had the screw-top lid off (seriously, how? I don't know). I tape that down, then they figured out that the can reach up INTO the unit through the feed dispenser. They broke the stupid thing within half an hour by doing that and triggering the dispenser inside.

I wrote a thank you note from them to the company that made the feeder. "Dear Sir or Madam, We as cats would like to thank the lack of research that you have put into your product....."

Just an update....we buried poor dead chickie out behind the coop. Surviving chickie, nicknamed Gash, for the time being, is doing great! Still has a flap of skin hanging off its neck, but BLU KOTE is AMAZING! I will NEVER be without the stuff around here from now on. Thinkiing about sending an email of appreciatiion for all the birds its saved.

Not only that, but Gash is the sweetest, calmest chickie... I will most likely keep it (if a girl). I'm so glad it made it, even through the sadness of losiing the other so horribly.
