They have lights and sirens for a reason folks!

I really think that everyone should have a drivers test every 10 years. If you fail, you must go through a safe driving course before you can drive again. I'm 48 years old, and I haven't taken a driving test in over 30 years. I think it would keep all the idiots off the road for a while and force all the people who are too old to drive to give up their licenses.

I'm glad Keith was already, and very sorry he was put in jeopardy.

Im so glad your husband is ok, I work at our local ambulance station as an EMT and people are ridiculous! Last month we went out to an accident on the interstate and one of our firefighters in full turnout gear and ANSI vest, was hit by a car with a driver gawking at the accident. Please if you pass an accident its alright to look but be aware of the people around you! kinda hard to save lives when our members are in the hospital! He broke his leg and fractured his pelvis, and of course the driver was fine!

i dont want people to get hurt but things like that make it really hard to do our job...

So glad to read he is OK.People who cause these accidents should have severe fines.

thats now law in Ontario.. if you dont move over you can be fined.. they have been using dashboard cameras to track ppl who dont move over 1 lane... never mind to the furthest side of your lane..

Thats the law in Florida too! A freind of mine was pulled over and ticketed for that very same thing. I have seen so many people here in Florida NOT pull over when an emergency vehicle was approaching and just last week someone blasted their horn at me for NOT moving forward when the light changed green in spite of a very loud firetruck trying to get through the intersection....Grrrrrrrr!

I'm glad your hubby is ok.
We have lost 2 different Highway Patrol Officers to drunk drivers in the last couple of years. They were on routine patrol and the drunks hit them head on. No lights no sirens.

Had an incident last week. Got paged out to a large fire to provide mutal aid and this grain truck would not get out of my way. Had the lights going; we do not have a siren; but I was laying on the horn. Finally had a wide enough spot to pass him. It was our jerk neighbor. Hope he doesn't have a fire this year I know I'll say something to him.

Our law requires you to slow down to 45mph and if possible to pull into the next lane safely when you come upon a law enforcement or fire or EMS vehicle with it's lights flashing.
Common sense also says to pull into the next lane when coming upon a disabled vehicle. I've had people suddenly throw their doors open in front of me when I am passing them.

A friend of mine was at an accident scene in his full turn outs helping and some lookieloo smacked him with the side mirror on their truck, happened right in front of the MHP officer who took off after the driver. Driver tried to claim to not have seen him. They got ticketed with careless driving, speeding through an accident scene, failure to stop after causing an accident, and reckless endangerment.

As is typical of my DH, he's mad that he has to drive a different patrol car and feels bad that the woman who only had liability ins. lost her car, but he's not mad at her.

Me? I'm still hopping mad.

I'm continually amazed at how good a person Keith is at his core. My reaction toward her would be a little different.

Why don't you chop up some fresh fruit and give that to him over vanilla ice cream, just to let him know you like him. You could add some chocolate sauce if you don't think that would kick him over to where he thinks you are buttering him up for something.

So glad your husband is ok, and his reaction to the situation is what makes him a good officer. I think one issue is that cars are made so soundproof these days, add the radio and you can't hear the siren. We had a large fire this week and as I was driving and watching the fire, I saw the fire truck before I could hear it and I was looking for it since the fire had just started.

Glad to hear your DH is ok.

Like ridgerunner I am afraid I would have had a different attitude.

It would seem people just don't care enough anymore about emergency vehicles til it comes to them. Many good thoughts for you both.

Drives me crazy at times. Then again his eldest daughter and I get worked up enough for the three of us. He got a perfectly cooked pot roast for supper last night. That'll have to do him.

Reminds me of an incident that happened about a year ago. DH was transporting a frequent visitor to the county jail to the jail when the guy tried to make a break for it. DH didn't chase after him. He just hollered at him "Jumpy, I'm too old to chase you and I don't want to have to shoot you, so get your ___ back here!" The guy did as he was told.
