i guess this will do.....

I posted a question last week or so about did anyone think there was an unusually large amount of spider webs this year, and such massive ones, and of course since it was me, it died a tragic death!!

I love spiders, scared to death of them, but love the banana spiders, we had one in our window one year and me and our 9 year old fed her all summer and she had two giant egg sacks and then died. It was sooo sad, like Charlotte's Web. I think the webs are thicker and heavier than before, and what other reasons do you all think there is going to be a bad winter?

I remember your thread and I believe I replied to it at least once.

Do you know what my DH does that he would kill me for mentioning on a public forum?

The orb weavers usually have long anchor threads to hold their webs in place, sometimes going to the ground or the rose bushes, etc.
When we take the puppy out at night, he invariably runs thru the anchor threads and causes the webs to collapse.
DH very carefully and very patiently finds the thread and re-attaches it. The web looks a little messed up after that, but then the poor spider doesn't have to re-spin her whole web.
One more reason I love this man.

I have seen several wooly bears that were mostly black. Isn't that a sign of a hard winter? Also there seem to be a lot and I mean A LOT of dead squirrels on the highway - almost like they are in a frenzy to stash food and are getting killed crossing the highway doing so...almost like the signs are really pointing to a hard winter.

Yep, I'm convinced it's gonna be a hard one.

Nope. Mother Nature and the decrease in daylight tells them when it's time to leave, not how much food is still available to them.
You should leave the feeders out for two weeks after you see the last hummer. That way any late migrators can get a bite to eat and rest on their travels.

We have more orb spiders than I've seen in ages. There's one nutty spider who anchors her web over my feed bin every night and every day I walk right into it. Aaaaaaacccccccckkkkkkkkkkkk!

OK, now I am convinced too. I am going to start stashing nuts as well...I will just look both ways before crossing the highway......
