Last night when my dh was leaving for work about midnight, I noticed my ducks and chickens were acting funny. Well I get the flash light and the gun. I look in the coop and it is a HUGE black snake

. I let the chicks out and close it in so dh can kill it when he gets home. Where the pin is I was scared I would accidently hit one of the goats if I shot at it. So needless to say I didn't sleep last night. I sat at the window and watched the animals.
I go out at like 7 to check on everyone. I lost one of my easter egg chicks and the snake was gone.

Cinnimon now her friend Saltpepper is sad and lonely.

So I walk around the shed and look what I find.

Before I could get back with the gun it went in to the roof. Then I thought I was seeing things.

trap and relocate them, call your police dept. to have someone from wildlife control to come out but last result kill them if you have to. I hate to say that because we have 4 snakes and the animals are only doing what nature tells them. but i too would be wildly upset if a snake was going after my birdie's ! Let us know how it goes plz

I am sorry to say but one of them, I had to kill it went after more of my chickens. I didn't want to but it was the snake or my chickens. In my thinking it had to go. It is the 3rd and 4th one I have found in like a month what can I do about them???

You may want to invest in a snake repellent. I just googled 'natural snake repellent' and there were quite a few. Also, here are some links with various helpful info on snakes. The last one is actually from the farmer's amanac forum!

hi dixierose992,

lime is suppose to keep snakes away, it burns there skin. i used it to protect some wrens who had built a nest and laid some eggs. the year before the wrens had a snake get there eggs and the birds freaked. they were litterally at our window sqawking. we did not realize at first was wrong with them. by then it was to late, my husband went out there with the shot gun and thought he hit it good enough but we did not find it.
anyway , the lime, the only thing you probably don't want to put it where your chicks could get a hold of any of it.

Personally...I LOVE DEAD SNAKE pics!

It is the 3rd and 4th one I have found in like a month what can I do about them???

I think you may want to have what is considered "house" chickens until you can catch, trap, kill, or relocate them. That sucker is/was HUGE

like that byc name, thechickenwhisperer:),

I know some people don't want to kill snakes, they are animals too. But I don't like snakes I prefer they be gone! My husband likes to leave king snakes alone. I don't like ANY~

Hi again, I think those are black racers. Personally, as a chicken owner that has spent a stupid amount of $ on my chickens, I don't trust ANY snake, and I don't think i am going to take the time to get my field guide to snakes out when face to face lol!

dixierose, did you also consider the thought of BABIES too  ??!!!
