They want to make it ALL illegal. What do you think of Senate Bill 510

This is a very interesting thread. With every bill there are going to be some apparent good and bad aspects. The biggest problems with the current bill is the unknowns. It's sort of like Pelosi's "we need to vote it into law to see what's in it." Food safety is important. I don't think anyone disagrees with that. I think what a lot of people have a problem with is the possibility that this bill will shut down sources of local food as well as hurt food diversity. I didn't know till recent years that carrots don't have to be orange, tomatoes don't have to be red, and potatoes don't need to be light brown. I am curious how many people here are not concerned with the bill and have seen Food, Inc.

Ridgerunner--- you asked; "How many deaths a year are acceptable to you ".

How much loss of liberty is acceptable to you? How much control from Big Bro? All laws & regs &rules benefit someone, but the peripheral damage to others is often substantial. We already HAVE laws
regulating food, drugs, etc. BUT,they are poorly enforced because of sloth, ineptitude and bribery. How often do we see outdated foodstuffs in our grocery store? I see it constantly.
How about meat packaged today, but ya KNOW it's re-packaged old stuff. On & on & on. We have plenty laws now. We have TOO many laws now. Besides,I trust none of the new laws
--I KNOW they all have hidden, confusing and/or unconstitutional sections. ALL of them are meant to rope us in even tighter by taking our money, land and freedom--or even making us sick
and letting us die.

I see civilization as a balancing act. Individuals give up some liberty, rights, freedoms, whatever you want to call them to allow people to live together in a civil society. What freedom you give up and what you gain by giving that specific freedom up define that society. I don't have a big problem with giving up my right to just jump in a car and hit the interstate without a license if there is a requirement that other people on the interstate also have to prove that they know how to drive by getting a license. I don't mind giving up my right to sell poisoned food to others if others also have to give up their right to sell poisoned food to me.

I expect myself to live up to certain standards, such as not selling poisoned food since I consider that to be morally wrong. I think it is reasonable to expect others to not sell poisoned food. I think it is reasonable to expect my government to stop people from selling poisoned food, whether sold intentionally, by accident, or by negligence. I feel there are two things in the Preamble that requires our government to take these steps.

insure domestic Tranquility - promote the general Welfare

How much loss of liberty is acceptable to me? Enough to allow me to live what I consider a civilized life. Not any more but not any less.

Not to insult anyone on here but I don't believe that any of you are smarter than this man here.

I agree. Our founding fathers were so wise. It's truly amazing to read the things that they've written because they can certainly be applied to the problems that face our country today.

I believe a bit more in self-control, more along the lines of your rights end where they start to interfere with mine. Of course, it is not that simple. My rights are also limited where they start to interfere with yours. That's what I meant by balance. Where that balance is defines what type of civilization we have.

I agree with Ben to a point. I need to know what liberty he is talking about. If you are talking about the rights in the Constitution, that is one thing. However, I am not going ot join a revolution to defend your "Liberty" to sell me poisoned food. As much smarter than me that Ben may have been, I'm not convinced that he would have considered that one of his unalienable rights. Perhaps you could mention which of your liberties you think this bill is taking away.

I agree this bill is not perfect, even with the amendments. It is a big complicated bill crafted by people we elected to represent us. It is addressing a complicated question, trying to bring a seventy year old bill up to modern times, addressing recent events such as some of the recent food scares and importing uninspected food from overseas. Any bill this complicated is going to have some unintended results and will need to be tweaked. That's why I like the provision of a required study then report back on the study results with proposals in 18 months. I'm not sure I like the timing of bringing this back up in an election year when things are usually extremely contentious and it is hard to get anything reasonable done, but that is one of the trade-offs. Nothing is perfect.

I have seen food, inc and I agree with this post. How a law is written and how it is enforced is also something to keep in mind. We are dealing with that in Colorado right now concerning raw dairy. The state has chosen to creatively interpret the law to say share holders can't consume the cream, yogurt, etc... made from their raw milk.

There is a new documentary coming out called FARMAGEDDON. Some of the things already happening to small farmers is what makes people like me suspicious of this bill.
