I'm so happy for you--reliving my first days with new chicks!!!

One tiny piece of advice from a relative newbie: love those little chicks up! Pick them up and play with them every day. That way they are more likely--though still not guaranteed--to tolerate or even enjoy being handled when they are adults.

When I got my first batch of chicks in May, I was totally concentrated on pasty-butt and bandy-leggedness, and every other thing that could possibly be wrong with the babies. I handled the chicks to give them medical once-overs, but then quickly put them back in the brooder for fear of stressing them out too much.

In hindsight, I wish I had just calmed down and loved them up a bit more. Now I only have two out of five who tolerate being held--only one who is really a people-chicken. You will be able to tell when you should get them back under their heat lamp: their feet get cool. I know that each chicken has its own personality, and frankly, I have one hen whom I doubt would cuddle no matter how she had been handled as a chick. Still, the next time I get day-olds, I'll do things a bit differently.

All the best!! Take lots of pictures because they grow unbelievably fast!
