Things That Chicken Eat That Surprised You

My Cereal!! Granola, Bran Flakes,Raisins and of course MILK. They would dip until they hit a raisin and then there was a huge announcement a raisin was found by a BLAWK and they were off on a chase. Then the little girls, 8 weeks had a shot before the big girls 18 weeks almost got back from the raisin frenzy

We have had chickens for 7 years now and I had not really thought about what they were eating besides the normal stuff. Hubby reminded me about the fire ants that used to inhabit our yard and the cow pastures surrounding us. We no longer have a fire ant problem. The chickens have cleaned them out. Also, ticks and chiggers are no more. When they were eating the fire ants they would eat one, shake their heads like it really wasn't good, then go right back for more. We are so used to not having to worry about ticks and chiggers that last year when we went on vacation I ended up with tick fever. We were in the Ozarks at a cabin that had ticks everywhere. Out of 7 people 3 of us came down with it. Now we have bug repealant packed and ready when we leave home. It is wonderful having our own bug exterminaters.

We just got chickens this year and yep---snakes, fire ants, every bug you can imagine & they keep messing up DH's wood pile 'cause there's bugs in there. They also made DS's pumpkin he was working on disappear and will absolutely fight over out of date yogurt. I have to get a picture of chickens with yogurt combs.

Heehee it's really fun reading this thread!

Something that I havn't seen posted yet is sparrows. My girls loooove sparrows and other birds, and I have one that specializes in catching them. About 2 to 3 times a year, I find a sparrow skeleton completely picked clean in the yard (most times near the coop since they try to sneak food).

I've also had one of my hens peck half the decorations off my nice jeans one day. She was like "Back pocket button? Don't mind if I do!" Needless to say they arn't my nice jeans anymore.

Well I have been cleaning up the chicken yard today and they found a mouse I guess today or days?

I have not noticed them crowding around any a lot. It had a tail and head only with a bit of skin left. Wow.

My roos were chasing a squirrel yesterday. They never caught it, but I'm sure it would have been a heck of a fight if they had. 2 of them were chasing it. I wasn't sure who to root for... Run ??? Run.

I've seen them eat a chipmunk, it was trying to eat some grain and our barred rock doesn't like uninvited guests apparently.
It was brutal but incredibly fascinating
