Things That Chicken Eat That Surprised You

Mine loved the rotten tomatoes from the garden

Ready for a turkey story? My husband and I raised turkeys a few years back a year that we had a grasshopper infestation. After they had cleaned out our 4 acres, they went scavenging for more, all down the road. Had to heard them back home several times. THe neighbors got a kick out of that, as I had a broom in one hand and a pole in the other to keep them going in the right direction.
When it came time to prepare them for Thanksgiving dinner and the freezer, we found a hypodermic needle in one's crop. It had that sinew-ey stuff all grown around it to protect the dumb cluck from getting hurt. We were amazed!

I would be afraid, very afraid, if our sizes were reversed. In addition to the mice, snakes and othe oddities I have observed my flock devouring with gusto, the most horrifying - yet intriguing - is the leftover fried or rotisserie chicken from the fridge. One might think these birds had not eated in years the way they will go after a piece of fried chicken. After a few years of this, I have found only a single bone left from their feasts. Who knew? Ok, so they'll very enthusiastically eat their potential young if you drop an egg. But a distant cousin who made it to adult status before being attacked by relatives? Makes you wonder. And I do have to agree with the writer who mentioned that the goats are pickier about their food choices. Mine are. But what amazing entertainment !!!!

If you can bring yourself to knock tomato hornworms off the plants, into a can or cup and throw them in the run you will be your chicken's hero for life. They LOVE those things. However allowing them to find your garden and pick them off themselves will yeild you NO TOMATOES, cuz they love tomatoes (which are red and full of seeds) almost as much as they Hornworms.

After we finished putting away all of our groceries, my husband dumped out the ice from the ice chest (on the ground, next to drive). Our chickens swarmed over the ice pieces like it was candy. Never saw them eat ice before....thought they would get a brain freeze!!
