Things to feed from home...

Should there be a limit to things like bugs and vegetable scraps? They are listed as treats, which seems a bit confusing. Also, will the recent diet of a chicken affect the following poop? I'm guessing it's better to give them less treats at one time and more frequently then say, letting them chomp down a stomach full in one go, once a week.

Hmmm...interesting question. The way I look at it is, if your birds free range, you will be hard pressed to limit their intake of bugs or vegies. They spend all day eating them. They are omnivores and raptors. They are genetically designed to binge when the opportunity presents itself. Chickens have been around way longer than Nutrena pellets. I just keep an eye on the health of my birds. Don't want them getting to fat or suffer from high blood pressure. Birds have a tremendously high metabolism so unless they are sedentary or live on a "treat" diet, chances are they will not suffer from over eating.

On cold mornings we take out warm oatmeal to them. This morning I cleaned out the fridge and found a head of lettuce that was wilting ... that was a huge treat for them.

My favorite thing to give them is Ramen noodles. They'll jump up to take them from my hands. I credit Ramen with taming our wilder girls. Once they got hooked on noodles a few times a week they decided I was OK to be around. Now ALL of the hens come running when they hear me open the house door!
