Mini rant:

I know the reasonable flight exists. Wisconsin -> Charlotte -> my regional airport. All I can find now are screwy like Wisconsin -> Orlando -> Charlotte -> my regional airport.

How do I find the reasonable flight?

try reverse search. home --> CLT -->MKE (guessing on the wisconsin end). If you can find the reverse you can usually get the flight numbers for the outbound legs and book those (as round trip)

Also, if you know the airline which offers the route yo'ure looking for you can search their site directly.
