What happens when you follow someone?

When someone follows me, I get a notification, and they appear in the list of my followers. Nothing else seems to happen on my end. (I could probably turn off the notifications, but I haven't bothered.) Most of the people that follow me seem to be fairly new, which makes me suspect they are trying all the options as they become familiar with the site.

Since I haven't followed anyone, I don't know what happens that direction. I'm hoping someone else will give the answer, because I would like to know but don't feel like experimenting right now.
