It turns out that the really high notes that are sung throughout it are high-pitched enough to the point my ear hurts hearing it at a low volume.

Young people can hear a much greater range of high pitched noise. The ability is lost quickly... Kids can hear stuff that teens can't. Teens can hear what 20 year olds can't.
By the time someone is middle aged they can't hear a lot.

So I feel ya. I whine immediately when my mom's tv volume hurts me because of ringing noises. It seems a lot of shows now add unnecessary background noise... The worst is when they're trying to simulate head trauma or after an explosion. Ridiculous that they make some of their audience suffer physical pain, and you can't predict what shows are going to do it.
Personally, I had a lot of ear infections as a kid. But the docs don't think I have them anymore so I don't get to have bubblegum medicine. They used to make a kind that was so good I'd sneak out at night to the fridge and drink extra medicine... No idea why they stopped making that.
I digress...

Most pharmacies can add flavors to any liquid medicine, so you could still get it

I once had to go to a compounding pharmacy to get a liquid medication made for my 10 month old daughter. The pharmacist asked if I wanted cherry or liver flavor… apparently vets also sent patients there.
