things your chickens do that make you laugh

It makes me smile when my hens are super dramatic all of the sudden, like when one of them realizes the flock moved while she was turned away from them and then she clucks really loud and runs with her wings out and sometimes flapping. Also my hens and my rooster all used to cuddle in a big pile in the back of the chicken coop to sleep. Sometimes I'd go in there and he would have his wing around one of them. It warmed my heart a little every time.

Mine made me smile the other day when they were all crowded into an area in their pre-coop pen. They were being extra cautious over something but I couldnt see it. I go in there and theres a half grown praying mantis at the top of the fence pole doing his best to intimidate those chickens that were half afraid of him and/or wanted to eat him. I saved him, those are good bugs......
Silly birds.

We have 10 chics, but for some reason one stands out for us. Her name is Bev and when I pat my arm she will fly up and squat down for balance. It is crazy. She will also jump on my leg when I am sitting on the patio. People think I'm a little loony, but I don't care, she's really special. Also, when I call "GIRLS" they all come running like I've got steak for them!

I think my rooster is funny. He growled at me like a dog the other day because I put 2 of his hens up in the coop while he was still out. He also crows at me in a very specific way when he thinks I should be doing something for him. He lets me know he wants OUT of the coop in the morning and I am not letting them out yet. Then, at the end of the day when they are ready to go back "home" he gathers the girls at the gate and gives me that crow to let me know that I need to let them out of the yard so they can go get supper and roost. He also let me know that I hadn't yet refilled their water in the yard one day. He is kind of a demanding little dude.

Uhhhhh.... just about everything they do makes me smile. Even when I have to pick some up and put them back over my make-shift, cobbled together garden fence because one or another was in there munching on the plants.

Whenever a hen (I have lots of different breeds) walks by at a good clip, I remark "Chicken on a mission!" and the contractor doing work on my property has picked up that phrase, too. He'll break away from a conversation to point out a Chicken On A Mission to me.

It's particularly adorable when it's one of the really fluffy girls, like an Orpington or Cochin, but even the less hefty hens are a hoot to watch. The bantam hens crack me up hurrying to get somewhere.

Several members of the flock, including a White Crested Black Polish rooster, like to rest on my lap to get a chest skritch. I love to watch them slowly fall asleep in contentment.

Right now I have two very young turkey poults, being raised with 5 BCM/Silkie mix chicks. One poult is a tom and at two weeks, he was already performing the I'm the Biggest, Baddest Tom Turkey in the brooder! "fluff up" dance. Even when his little bitty tail feathers were only a quarter inch long.

One chicken I hoped was a pullet has revealed he's really a cockerel (by his feathering - he's not crowing yet) and he is VERY friendly. He often comes to the French doors and pecks at the glass. I suspect he wants inside, because he will sneak through any doorway he finds open. I don't know why it's so cute to watch him snack on dog kibble... of course, the dogs don't like this at all.

I love it when I call my chickens back closer to the house and they all 4 come a runnin' and flappin'...My friends think my chickens are just great.....although they act a little more like dogs than chickens! Makes me smile everytime they come to my voice....(ps...I usually have treats for them! lol!) Makes me glad that I spent the time and effort with them as babies..........~Beulah

Every time they bend over to peck, I crack up at those fluffy butts. Especially the Splash BLRW bantam. Nothing's cuter. I also love it when they stand back up and scratch the ground. Don't know why, I just think it's funny.
