Known as the "Isle of 8 Flags", it had the following flags flown over it since 1562: France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain (again), the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. It is the only municipality in the United States that has flown eight different national flags.

It was also a notorious hideout for pirates along the east coast

How i do adore that place..I have a relative named Pamplin from 1810..and she came from virginia.. so that name carries a lot of weight in that town. i pretend and might be kin to her..

My freind took us uptown to some wonderful restaurant that served special cheeseburgers.. worth the trip alone.. ahhhh good memories..thanks

After reading quadcam I am almost ashamed. WOW. OK Here goes. I was born in McDowell county West (by God) Virginia. The largest Coal producing area in the world in the 1950's and 60's. Home of the massacre of Sid Hatfield. Descendent of "Devil Anse" Hatfield of ( Hatfield and McCoys). Sid was the sheriff of Matewan WV, There was a movie made about it. Keystone WV, just up the road, was the home of the largest banking failure(1999) in recent US History. I moved to where I live now when I was 4. Lake Shawnee or Lake Bottom West Virginia. I am 4 miles from the Hank Williams Memorial Bridge. This is where some believe he passed away on the ride to Oak Hill WV. I live on top of an old Shawnee Indian hunting encampment. In the 1700's the clay family was massacred here. There are millions of artifacts to be found at plowing time every year. It is also the "legendary" home of the Spanish Gold that Hernando DeSoto looted from the PeeDee Indians in South Carolina in 1500's. Also Within 15 mile radius is former home of NBA great Jerry West, Dr John Nash, and home of NFL Rookie Ahmad Bradshaw.
 
JDYPat, this is a beautiful part of the country to live in. Too bad for us all the trees block the view of the Blue Ridge. Which isn't all that bad of a thing. LOL
 
I grew up in Monroe,La we live a couple of blocks from the Biedenharn Museum.The Biedenharns invented Coke,one of their daughters lived here & it has an old Bible collection & beautiful gardens there.

Our area is rich in Indian Mounds, the most famous is Poverty Point, one of the oldest Indian mounds in North America.

I grew up in Hogtown (aka Gainesville Fl), Tom Petty's home town. Also the birth place of Gatorade. I now live well outside the city limits in the boonies. The inventor of Gatorade lived a block away from us until last year when he passed away.
