Recently a poster asked about her hen dieing from sour crop. I purchase "Practical Poulty" at TSC and there was an article that mentioned that a hen was thought to have sour crop. After having treated her for sour crop xrays revealed she had swallowed a 1 inch wood screw. Surgery was performed and she survived. My point is this. Perhaps when there is a problem with a hen or roo the problem may be something unorthdox such as having eaten something they shouldn't. I suppose this is the risk taken when free ranging our chickens. Just thought you might like to know.

Tim, they find all sorts of ways to do themselves in! Sour crop will have a really sour smell, though, and the crop will feel gassy, sort of balloon-like. No telling, though, what the heck they eat on a day to day basis. Amazing that they'll avoid poisonous plants, yet eat a screw.

You are absolutely right, though; sometimes things are not as they seem.
