If you figure that one out, let us know, would you?
It's -2F here, with 85% humidity...
My husband keeps saying 'see? I told you to put in a heat lamp' and I keep saying 'but the forum says they'll be ok!!'. Hee hee. It's my fault for getting leghorns. My RIR and other birds are all fine, even at 0F. Even the leghorns don't act any differently, not cold a bit. But I am getting a little frostbite on the tips. I'm putting vaseline on the combs, but then they rub it everywhere and I come home to brown leghorns! (That vaseline picks up dirt like crazy!!)..
Merry Christmas to all and "Happy Holidays" to every one else. Stay safe and I'll see you on the flip side. Taking a few days off for the celebrations.
Yowie... -20F here this morning... the moon is still so bright you don't need a light outside.
I still have not added heat to the turkeys/pheasants/chukars in the open hoop-run.
I still have not added heat to the layer coop.
I HAVE added heat (kerosene cabin heater) to the nearly empty breeder coop that houses all the coturnix quail, all the bantam breeds (though there are 3 silkies out in the layer coop that are holding their own just fine) my new Orpingtons and my Dorkings. But I only add enough heat to keep it in the mid 20s.
It's time to bundle up to go outside... I do NOT want to leave the couch...
These are the mornings that I really berate myself for getting involved with birds in the first place...
I'm using bag balm on the leghorn combs now until we can fix the ventilation - I've got large vents at the top of the coop, but they were blocked since the roost bars stick the chicken heads right in front of them
. So we're moving the roost bar down after the holiday and opening those up. Hopefully that will help. Also I'm going to dump out the water dish each night or cover it. My white leghorns look dirtier every day with the bagbalm. Bah!
All the rest of my chickens appear to be fine. we are single digits at night and my 14 weekers/24 weeker coop doesn't seem to notice (although none have much in the way of combs or wattles, not even my roo).
