We had a big windstorm come through last Wednesday... 11/16. 50 mph gusts, at 10-12°F. Power went out at 3am at our house, until 6am, then again from 7:30am until somewhere around 3 in the afternoon. Chickens were sheltered from the wind, and never knew the difference when the power was out. They're doing fine. Over the weekend, we cleared up and dipped into the -20F range. Have not found any signs of frostbite yet... knock on wood. The two pop doors have not been shut yet, and the window is open a crack. This morning was -13F, and it was 11F inside the coop.

We have had two incidents of coop fires up here that we know of... how many more we don't know.

This is not AK, but could happen anywhere a heat lamp is used. IF you decide to use a heat lamp, take precautions to secure it away from combustibles and birds!

I think it's too late to add on this year, but next!...
But I dont' know how many bodies I can fit into that space without causing tempers to flare.
And how many inches of roost per LF chicken?

A good rule is about a foot per fat bottomed biddy.

You mean on the roost?

and thanks btw!

Yes, on the roost about a foot per bird. Extra space is always good too, I have a few that are so meek they abhor getting pecked and will sleep by themselves on a separate roost. They did fine last winter snuggling by themselves.
