Am nervous but really want to have chickens, have looked at pre-built houses, wish I could build my own. Just how messy are they? Is it a daily cleanup of weekly?

It matters how many chickens you will have and how big their coop is. If it is one of those tiny little houses I would say at least every week. If it is more of a walk in coop you could go a few weeks.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Cleanliness is the key to good health in chickens. Yes, they are pooping machines. So you will need to devote some time each day to clean up after them, feed, water, clean up things for them, get them outside or manage their run. It doesn't take a lot of time, but the chickens will be far happier if you do spend more time with them.

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of articles on getting started with chickens that might help you out...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Good luck and we are glad you could join our community!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. TwoCrows has answered your question nicely. Chickens are work, but definitely worth it. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Do you have a breed preference?
