Thinking about raising chickens for meat... How many for a first timer

It can be a loooooooooong 8 weeks. I would keep them seperate from egg layers. They will hog all the food.

With seperate housing, since they're only going to be around 8 weeks, it doesn't really have to be anything special, does it?

I kept mine in a chicken house that my egg layers used to live in. I had curtains on it and raised and lowered them depending on weather conditions. I did not let mine out to free range. They stayed in there all the time but did get sunlight and fresh air. When it got cold I raised the curtains.

I just kept their area as clean as I could and their waterer full and their feeder full.

Thanks for all the great advice. These boards are great for getting information and making connections. Think I'm going to make the plunge this spring. With a freezer full of deer, my space is limited - but by spring there will be more room!
