Thinking about starting a 'chicken rescue'.....

Thanks for your input everyone To be clear, I'm NOT gonna keep rescuing and adopting them out. *IF* I did this, I would get a set of in-need-of-home hens from craigslist and that would be it. None of this coming and going stuff. Maybe a while later (if they get old and die or something) I'd rescue another set and do it again...but not this active/public chicken rescue. This was a misunderstanding, no offenses.

Ok so you Would bring "rescue" chickens to your own property, not to your church.. But you are still risking getting diseased chickens if you get them from a random unknown source. The "emergencies" forum is full of sad threads where people did so. And it happened to me too, when i purchased pol pullets that carried MG. Your idea is heartfelt, just be wary.

I'm not sure either, surly Google and help you find out.
Maybe floating through some articles about keeping battery hens can hep you find members who have owned battery hens there self. Then PM them. Let me see what I can find for you.

The member is the in UK, so not sure if the same adoption system is in place here, but it may give you a good idea as to how to proceed in finding out.

That is the route i'd go. Ive looked into rescuing some ex-battery hens myself. Seems easy to do in great britain and australia; in the states not so easy. May be best if you approach your nearby farm directly. If you suceed, you will be giving a new life to hens that have literally lived through hell. "Rescue" in every sense of the word. I think most people adopt ex-battery red-sex links since they are generally more docile. But @The Moonshiner will im sure say that leghorns need love too. Keep us posted, and good luck on whatever you decide.

Hi @Weeg i looked at the links you posted. The first is in australia, but the 2nd is in the u.s. I believe in california. Thats a long way from maine (or texas), but may be a start.

I posted the video below on another thread about rescued ex-battery hens. The hellish conditions ex-battery hens live in has haunted me for years. I currently have 260 layer hens of many breeds and colors, and they live ou safe, healthy care-free lives. But if i could find some ex-bat hens to adopt, i would in a heartbeat. Just be aware of their special needs during their first few months. Good luck to you; i hope you go for it!
